The President of the United States of America authorized by executive order, awarded The Bronze Star Medal to Captain David I. Lyon, Commando Special Operations Advisory Group - Afghanistan for exceptionally meritorious service in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Captain Lyon’s outstanding dedication to duty during combat operations in Afghanistan contributed to the overwhelming success of the command’s mission. His actions are in keeping with the finest traditions of military service and reflect distinct credit upon himself, the NATO Special Operations Component Command-Afghanistan/Special Operations Joint Task Force-Afghanistan, and the United States Air force.
Captain David I. Lyon, 28, of Sandpoint, Idaho, was a 2008 U.S. Air Force Academy graduate, a three-year letter winner for the Falcon’s track and field and a Mountain West champion in the shot put.
A member of the 21st Logistics Readiness Squadron at Peterson Air Force Base, Lyon was killed when a vehicle-born improvised explosive device was detonated near his convoy. He was one of 10 killed in the attack, along with two NATO military personnel and seven Afghan forces.
Lyon had been stationed at Peterson since January 2010 and was scheduled to return from deployment in February 2014. He volunteered to deploy to Afghanistan.
He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Purple Heart and the Air Force Combat Action Medal.
He is survived by his wife, Capt. Dana Lyon, USAF, and his parents Jeannie and Robert; and his brother, Sean.
